Eligibility Criteria

You are eligible to renew your Canadian passport only if:

• Your current passport is nearing expiry (Canadian passports are valid for 5-10 years).
• Your renewed passport will have the same name, gender, date, and place of birth as the expired one.
• The last passport was for adults, as the child passport cannot be renewed. You must apply for a new one if it expires.

However, you must apply for a new one in the following cases:

• Child passports issued to those under 16 years old cannot be renewed.
• If you previously held a child passport (issued before age 16), you must apply for a new adult passport. It cannot be renewed.
• Changes to name, date of birth, place of birth, or gender identifier require a new adult passport application.

Required Documents

The requirements for the renewal of the Canadian passport are simple and straightforward. You only need to submit the following documents with your application:

• The issuance and expiry date of your passport
• Your passport number
• Your most recent passport, if it’s still valid
• 2 identical passport photos

Canadian Passport Renewal Procedure

Step 1

Fill out the form on its official website by downloading the PDF on your computer. You must read the instructions at the end of the form to ensure you’ve completed it correctly. 

Step 2

Take a printout after filling out the form and sign each application page.

Step 3

Attach all the required documents and passport photos to the form.

Step 4

Include 2 references on your application. The references must have known you for at least two years, but cannot be a family member.

Step 5

Pay the required fee online or by visiting the consulate.

Step 6

Step 7
