Guggenheim Abu Dhabi: The Future Icon of Global Modern Art in the UAE

Set to open in 2025, Guggenheim Abu Dhabi is designed to revolutionise the art of the Middle East. Situated in the centre of Saadiyat Cultural District, this groundbreaking initiative is a joint effort between the Department of Culture and Tourism, Abu Dhabi, and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation.

It aims to be a global platform for dialogue, cultural exchange, and artistic discovery, grounded in the interconnected histories of West Asia, North Africa, and South Asia (WANASA).

About Guggenheim Abu Dhabi

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi will be the largest of all Guggenheim museums worldwide, surpassing its world-renowned siblings in New York, Venice, and Bilbao. The museum’s purpose is to exhibit modern and contemporary art from across the globe, with a strong focus on artists and movements from the WANASA region. Its developing collection already encompasses more than 600 works across diverse media and generations.

Architectural Master piece by Frank Gehry

The symbolic building, designed by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry, is a wonder of both structure and purpose. The museum itself is comprised of asymmetrical cones, serving as entrances and sites for open-air exhibitions. Derived from Middle Eastern wind towers, the sustainable design of the building features natural ventilation and shaded courtyards, combining art, nature, and heritage.

Construction and Project Timeline

The foundations of the museum are already complete, and the main building is currently being constructed with steel, concrete, wood, and aluminium. It’s due to be completed in 2025, which will be a huge milestone for the cultural development of the UAE.
