Makani Dubai — Dubai Municipality’s navigation app

It is the official geo-addressing system of Dubai

Finding a specific location in Dubai can be very problematic as Dubai does not have a traditional addressing system. In an effort to improve its residents’ navigation through residential areas, Dubai Municipality has launched a new navigation app: Makani Dubai.

What is Makani?

Makani means “my location” in Arabic. Under the Makani system, every building, house and public place in Dubai will have a unique number (“Makani number”) to help people identify their location and share it. The application is different from Google Maps as it uses the UAE National Grid for a more accurate navigation system around the city. It is the official geo-addressing system of Dubai, endorsed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai.

How does Makani work?

Makani is a smartphone application available on Android and iOS. It can also be used on tablets, desktops and laptops, as well as on GPS devices due to an auto-conversion feature. You can download the Makani app from either Google Play (Android) or the App Store (iOS).

The Makani number can be obtained through the application. All you need to do is to download the app or go to http://www.makani.ae/, insert your address in its traditional format, using area name, street number and villa or building number – it will then provide the unique 10 digit Makani number that can be used to search for specific directions in Dubai.

Enter the Makani Number in the search field to locate a particular building/entrance on the map.

Residents of Dubai have been handed out their Makani number in the last couple of weeks and the number itself consists of 10 digits which is unique to the property. This information should be available from building management and has been posted in the lobby/main entrance areas of buildings.

Buildings with multiple entrances will have a unique Makani number for each entrance which is particularly helpful for large properties such as malls (Dubai Mall has 11) and parks (Safa Park has 4).

Although this is still a soft launch of Makani Dubai, the application offers several other interesting features:

  1. Identification of public institutions, such as hospitals and healthcare services, educational institutions, local landmarks and government organisations nearest to you in Dubai.
  2. Precise location details, which are accurate to the coordinate, can be shared with other users.
  3. Makani number can be added to the contact information of an individual on your smartphone.
  4. Turn-by-turn voice navigation.
  5. Regularly updated traffic information for the main roads across Dubai.
  6. Makani is accurate to 1 square metre.

Makani Dubai is an excellent initiative from the Government of Dubai and the Dubai Municipality to help improve navigation across Dubai for everyone using the Makani number, from officials to residents to emergency service providers.

With Makani, you don’t need to worry about language, names or directions – Just remember the first 5 digits and the last digit of the Makani number and you’re set!

Makani will help you find any location in Dubai and propertyfinder.ae will help you find properties for rent in Dubai or properties for sale in Dubai and elsewhere in the UAE!
