A brief history of Baniyas Sports and Cultural Club

Founded in 1982, Baniyas Sports and Cultural Club has always been about more than results. Set up under the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports in Abu Dhabi, the club began with a straightforward mission: give young people a home in sport and help them grow. It spent its early years building steadily through the UAE football leagues, earning its place among the country’s top clubs one season at a time.
That patience paid off. The 1991–92 UAE President’s Cup was a first taste of major silverware, followed by a second President’s Cup in 2002. When the UAE Pro League was professionalised in 2009–10, Baniyas stepped in and immediately made its mark, finishing runners-up in their second season and reaching the pinnacle in 2012–13, when Baniyas Football Club Abu Dhabi won the GCC Champions League, defeating Qatar’s Al Khor 2–0 in the final.
The club today competes in the ADNOC Pro League and is led by Lieutenant General Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan. More than four decades in, Baniyas remains what it was always built to be: a club rooted in community, competing at the highest level.

Baniyas Stadium, the home of FC Baniyas
Baniyas Football Stadium opened in February 2010. Designed by architect Roger Taillibert, the ground holds an official capacity of 6,927 spectators and is among the more modern football venues in the UAE capital.
The stadium’s most distinctive feature is its roof, inspired by the tents that were once home to the Bani Yas tribe, the community from which the club takes its name. The club underwent a significant modernisation in 2023, further enhancing its facilities and match-day experience.
Baniyas Stadium location and how to get there
Baniyas Stadium Abu Dhabi is situated in the Al Shamkha area, to the west of Abu Dhabi city. The Baniyas Stadium location is served by public bus, with stops within 700 metres of the ground, as well as by taxi and ride-hailing apps. Parking is available on-site for those travelling by car.
For ticketing enquiries and match-day information, the stadium ticket office can be contacted on (02) 885 8444. Operating hours are 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM and 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
Attending a match at Baniyas Club Stadium
The club competes in the ADNOC Pro League, the UAE’s top-tier professional football competition. The compact size of Baniyas Football Stadium creates an intimate atmosphere, with clear sightlines from all areas of the ground. Match day is a family-friendly experience suited to first-time visitors and seasoned supporters alike.
Tickets can be purchased through the club’s official ticketing platform. Fixtures are published on the club’s official schedule page and updated throughout the season.
Sports and disciplines at Baniyas Club

Baniyas Sports Club fields competitive teams across seven disciplines, making it one of the most versatile sporting institutions in Abu Dhabi. Football may be the flagship, but the club’s performances in fencing and jiu-jitsu in particular have earned it recognition well beyond the domestic game.
Football: The flagship sport
The first team competes in the ADNOC Pro League under manager Daniel Isăilă, the Romanian coach appointed in September 2025 to implement a disciplined defensive system combined with rapid counter-attacking play. The football department’s honours span two UAE President’s Cups, four Second Division championships, and the 2012–13 GCC Champions League.
Baniyas Club also runs a women’s football programme, backed by a dedicated committee established to develop female talent at grassroots and competitive levels across Abu Dhabi.
Other sports at Baniyas Sports Club

Beyond the pitch, Baniyas Sports Club is active across six additional disciplines:
- Volleyball: Baniyas competes in the Emirati Men’s Volleyball League and regularly strengthens its squad with professional signings.
- Handball: The club fields a handball team in national professional league competition.
- Basketball: Baniyas Basketball participates in league play with a strong emphasis on youth progression.
- Fencing: One of the club’s most decorated non-football programmes, Baniyas Fencing has produced medallists at Arab and Federation-level championships.
- Jiu-Jitsu: The jiu-jitsu department is among the club’s most celebrated. The squad claimed third place in the Junior category at the Abu Dhabi World Junior Jiu-Jitsu Championship, with individual gold medals for Faraj Al Awlaki, Muhammad Al Shehhi, and Crijor de Elevera.
- Women’s football: A growing programme backed by a dedicated committee within the club structure.
Baniyas Club academy and youth development
Youth development sits at the heart of the Baniyas mission. The club’s philosophy centres on building discipline, teamwork, and perseverance alongside technical skills, delivered through two distinct academy programmes.
Baniyas Academy (ages 6–18)
Baniyas Academy is the club’s flagship youth football programme, open to boys aged 6 to 18. Age groups run from Under 6 through to Under 21, allowing players to progress through a structured pathway from first kick to near-professional level.
Players benefit from coaching aligned with professional club standards, competitive league play against other UAE clubs, and exposure to international tournaments. The academy has sent teams to the Manchester City Academy Festival and the LaLiga Promises Academy Championship, giving young players a global benchmark for their development.
Baniyas Private Academy
The Baniyas Private Academy is open to players of all abilities, from beginners taking their first steps in football to advanced players targeting the next level of performance. Experienced coaches apply modern training methods, and the curriculum places equal weight on character development and technical ability.
Registration is completed online and requires a passport, birth certificate, and Emirates ID for both the applicant and their parent or guardian.
