The Emirate of Ajman (locally pronounced Aiman) is one of the seven emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. It joined the UAE on December 2, 1971. Its area is approximately 259 square kilometers, equivalent to 0.3 percent of the country's total area excluding the islands, and it is the smallest of the UAE's emirates. Its population was approximately 504,846 in 2017, according to the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Center, making it the fourth most populous emirate in the country. It is named after the city of Ajman, which is its seat of government. The emirate's main land area is a semi-enclave surrounded by the Emirate of Sharjah to the north, east, and south. The emirate lies on a coastline of approximately 16 kilometers along the Arabian Gulf, with two adjacent areas not directly connected to it: Masfout and Manama, both of which are primarily agricultural. It was founded by the Al Nuaimi tribe around 1775. It is ruled by Sheikh Humaid bin Rashid Al Nuaimi and his son, Sheikh Ammar bin Humaid Al Nuaimi, the Crown Prince. Its capital is Ajman City, the largest city, home to the Ruler's Court, the headquarters of government departments and institutions, and the port of Ajman, located on a natural creek that runs through the city.
