History
According to the Ajman Museum, human settlement in Ajman dates back to 3000 BC, with numerous pottery artifacts from that period having been found.
The modern Emirate of Ajman was founded in 1816 when the Al Nuaim tribe settled on the coast and began fishing and pearl diving. Ajman was, in fact, the largest center for boat building, witnessing the construction of thousands of dhows that sailed the Arabian Gulf in its shipyards. The emirate first emerged as an independent entity in 1820. Its ruler was Sheikh Rashid bin Humaid Al Nuaimi.
According to J.G. Lorimer, the population of the Emirate of Ajman between 1900 and 1908 was approximately 750 people.
In 1820, Britain signed a peace treaty with nine of the ruling sheikhs, including Ajman. In 1853, the Perpetual Treaty of Peace was signed, a copy of which is on display at the Ajman Museum, linking the region to Britain.
Britain withdrew from the region in 1968, and 1971 saw the formation of the United Arab Emirates, which included the Emirates of Ajman, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Fujairah, and Umm Al Quwain, followed by the accession of Ras Al Khaimah in 1972.
