About Al Dhafrah

Al Dhafra is one of three municipal regions in Abu Dhabi, offering a captivating blend of heritage and nature. Known until 2017 as ‘Al Gharbia’ or the ‘Western Region,’ it has since been renamed to ‘Al Dhafra,’ which means ‘where the desert meets the sea’—a true reflection of what this massive region has to offer.
Often overlooked in favour of Abu Dhabi’s urban heart, this vast region is a treasure trove of Emirati culture, desert landscapes, and an abundance of oil and gas reserves. With a strategic position near the UAE’s border with Saudi Arabia and home to several key industrial zones, Al Dhafra plays a crucial role in Abu Dhabi’s economic and ecological landscape.
